How to Hand Over Keys of your Kingdom Safely

I recently had the opportunity to speak about Managed Services myth and realities, on a panel titled “Managed Services: How to Hand Over the Keys to Your Kingdom Safely.”, hosted by the ISC2 Hellenic Chapter. This session brought together industry leaders to tackle the most critical, yet often misunderstood, aspect of IT strategy. More specifically. we discussed how to entrust external providers with core operations without compromising control, security, or business continuity.
During the discussion, I shared insights from my own experience from both sides of the table. As an owned of a company that delivers managed services and as a customer who relies on them. This dual role shaped my contribution to the discussion. More specifically, on the provider side, I talked about what it takes to earn a client’s trust. Clear accountability, robust security practices, and a deep understanding of their business goals. In addition, on the customer side, I emphasized the importance of retaining visibility and control. The importance of this remains, even after responsibilities shift to a third party.
Some of the key points we covered:
- Balance of Control and Delegation. It’s not about handing over everything. it’s about deciding what to delegate, how to measure it, and when to escalate.
- Trust with Verification. Choosing the right provider isn’t just about credentials. it’s mostly about transparency, accountability, and clear performance metrics from day one.
- Security by Design. Whether you’re the service provider or the client, secure on-boarding, access management, and continuous monitoring are non-negotiable.
- Building True Partnerships. The most effective managed services relationships aren’t transactional. They’re collaborative, strategic, and built on mutual respect.
- Cultural Alignment. A successful hand-off isn’t purely technical. The best partnerships are those where the provider truly understands your business priorities, not just your tech stack.
The panelists brought different perspectives in discussing Managed Services myth and realities, from cybersecurity and operations to vendor management. However, we all agreed on one thing. While managed services continue to expand, this kind of dialogue is essential. Handing over the “keys” doesn’t mean giving up control. With the right approach, managed services can actually strengthen governance, accelerate innovation, and free up internal teams to focus on what matters most.
